Additives Without Negative Effects
The production of hot mix paving asphalt generates strong, long-lasting odors (from sulfides and hydrocarbons) that can be offensive to employees and neighbors. In response to demand for effective odor eliminators, OMI Industries developed a range additives that can be mixed directly into petroleum products used in the asphalt industry.
By adding a small amount of Ecosorb® additive to any phase of asphalt use or production — from manufacturing to storage to transportation to use — odorous emissions are reduced and even eliminated. We call this odor control by emission suppression. Before it’s airborne, it’s gone.

Terminals – Transportation and Handling
Asphalt terminals tend to be located in industrial areas, often near rail and harbor access. However, they still have neighbors — sometimes residential. The loading and unloading of asphalt can be a smelly process.
Even transportation of asphalt out of the terminal can be a problem, with the trucks traveling down public city streets. As little as 1 gallon of Ecosorb® additive in 10,000 gallons of asphalt can eliminate nuisance odors from transportation and handling.
Terminals – Storage Tanks
It may not always be practical to use asphalt additive in a terminal or other storage facility, especially with long-term storage tanks that vent foul odors. One solution: collect vent gases and port them to a misting vessel of Ecosorb®. The mist removes odors before they are released into the atmosphere during tank cleaning.
Hot Mix Plants
In best cases, hot mix plants are located in areas away from residential and commercial neighbors. Older plants often find, although originally located in remote areas, neighbors move closer to a plant and then complain about preexisting odors. Plants can reduce these new complaints by blending Ecosorb Asphalt Additive into their binder.
Proven Effective in Lab Tests
Independent laboratory testing confirms odor elimination using Ecosorb additives on asphalt. Gas chromatography mass spectrometer was used to detect the emission in the headspace of asphalt before and after addition of Ecosorb additives. Test results determined a reduction in volatile components detected in the treated sample versus the untreated sample. Ecosorb additives reduced volatile emissions.
How to Use
Add the correct dilution quantity of Ecosorb additive to asphalt binders, fuel oil, and used oil fuels during transfer, storage, and handling processes. Unwanted odors are removed, even from burner exhaust.
Complete odor management can take place during manufacturing of asphalt products in plants, as it is loaded into trucks for transport, and even during road construction.
