One of the biggest operational challenges for landfills is dealing with persistent odors, which can be a nuisance for employees and neighboring businesses and residents. Mitigating foul odors often requires a significant investment in solutions that are often comprised of chemicals that merely mask the bad smells.

Thankfully, there are solutions that are both eco-friendly and highly effective – creating a safer, odor-free environment. This was the key theme of a recent Waste360 article that highlights “new odor management weapons” for landfill owners and operators.

Dr. Laura Haupert, Director of Research and Development at OMI Industries, offered insights and commentary in this article, which also discussed how the company’s solutions are ideal for any landfill. For example, the article highlighted how OMI Industries’ Ecosorb®, a blend of plant oils and water, can be sprayed in the air, forms droplets that attract and absorb airborne odor molecules.

With this process, the environmentally friendly solution completely eliminates odors without the use of harsh or hazardous chemicals, expensive emission control systems or masking fragrances.

The article also discussed OMI Industries’ new partnership with Byers Scientific & Manufacturing, a leading designer, engineer and manufacturer of equipment for the industrial odor management industry. OMI Industries formulated a special version of Ecosorb® for Byers Scientific & Manufacturing equipment and applications, which they are integrating into its Waterless Vapor-Phase System to create a solution that is safe for employees and neighboring residences and businesses.

In addition, the story highlighted a new Byers Scientific & Manufacturing/OMI Industries pilot at the Miramar landfill in San Diego, where a mobile vapor unit is being used in its composting facility. Since the launch of the program in January 2017, odor issues have already declined.

“Both our regulators and participating community members are reporting fewer odors in the impacted communities,” says Mark zu Hone, Program Manager at Miramar, in the article.
