In the food-processing arena, foul odors can vary widely, and can be very difficult to fully mitigate. In addition, production facilities located close to neighboring residents and businesses, are susceptible to odor complaints and can even be fined by state and local government agencies.
For Activ International, a global supplier of broths, extracts, flavors and colors, derived from meat, seafood and vegetables, this was the challenge that it faced. As production increased at its Middlesex, New Jersey, facility, so too did the chicken-related malodors that naturally occur during food production and processing.
As a result, one neighboring business continually complained to Middlesex County officials, causing multiple odor fines – up to $15,000 per complaint. This resulted in a total of $45,000 in county fines assigned to Activ International.
“We found ourselves in a situation where our production had increased over the years, which resulted in a rise of odors,” said Matt Colacci, Production Manager at Activ International. “We were quickly in need of an odor control solution that would help reduce the complaints and prevent additional fines.”
In order to rid the facility of odors, reduce complaints and offset these exorbitant fines, Activ International sought help from the OMI Industries team, who quickly and effectively developed a customized solution.
The engineering team designed a system to distribute of Ecosorb®, a solution that eliminates odors without the use of harsh or hazardous chemicals, expensive emission control systems or masking fragrances, through three LP air panels that fed into the exhaust duct working system. A proprietary blend of plant extracts, Ecosorb® seeks out and destroys organic and inorganic odors on a molecular level – safely and effectively neutralizing even the most persistent food processing odors.
Almost immediately the foul odors were completely mitigated, and the facility has not received complaints from its neighbor for more than 60 days. In addition, by using Ecosorb®, Activ International was awarded a $18,000 rebate from the county, and every thirty days the facility will be rebated 20 percent of the original fine.
“The OMI team was highly responsive, developing the right solution that allowed us to begin recouping these fines,” added Colacci. “And with Ecosorb, an eco-friendly solution, it was much easier to prove to the county that not only did we fight the odors, but also we did it in a way that was safe for everyone.”
